Knowing that a quarter is 25 cents and a dime is 10 cents, the relationship can be written as:
.25x + .10(x - 2) = 2.25 Multiply thru by 100 to clear decimals.
25x + 10(x - 2) = 225
25x + 10x - 20 = 225
35x = 245
x = 7
There are 7 quarters and x - 2 = 7 - 2 = 5 dimes.
