The perimeter of a rectangle is 38 inches. If the length of the rectangle is six inches less than four times the width, find the area of the rectangle

The key on this type of question is to find a way to relate the quantities of the given rectangle to one another. On this one we have

Perimeter = 2W + 2L = 38

L = 4W - 6

I would plug the second equation into the first to get

2W + 2(4W – 6) = 38

2W + 8W – 12 = 38

10W = 50

W = 5

So Width = 5, then Length = 4(5) - 6 = 14

Meaning that the Area here is length x width = 5 x 14 = 70 square inches
