How long is each piece?

If a 25 inch rope is cut into three pieces such that the middle sized piece is 1 inch longer thatn the short piece and the longest piece is twice as long as the short piece.

Let's see if we can figure this out. Start by listing the information in a way that let's you use math on it. We'll do that by using variables for each of the 3 sides

x=shortest

y=middle

z=longest

we know the total length is 25in so:

x + y + z = 25in

We also know some more stuff like:

y = x + 1in

z = 2x

Ok that's good now we can just replace y and z with those last bits of info and get

x + [x+1in] + 2x = 25in

x + x + 2x = 24in

4x = 24in

x = 6in

Now we now the short side just plug that info into the other equations

y = x + 1in  = 6in + 1in

y = 7 in

z = 2x = 2 * 6in

z= 12in

so the short side is 6in, the middle is 7in, the longest is 12in

Let x equal the length of the shortest rope.  Then x+1 is the length of the middle piece, and 2x is the length of the longest piece. The sum of the three lengths is 25, so we have as our equation:

x + (x+1) + 2x = 25

Combine all the x's together:

4x + 1 = 25

Subtract 1 from each side:

4x = 24

Divide both sides by 4:

x = 6

Since x was the length of the shortest piece, the shortest length is 6.  The middle piece is x+1, or 7.  The longest piece is 2x, or 12.  You can check that the three lengths do add up to 25.

so first u have to think of cutting a rope into three pieces, snip, snip. we know that the rope is 25 inches. and the middle is one inch longer then the shortest. so the number sorta becomes 24 for the time being. then u take that number and divide it, so now we have 12. and 12+12 equals 24, so we divide 12 and we get six. and those are our two shortest pieces, and now u had back that 1 to the middle pieces of rope. so ur answer is 6 inch. for the shortest. 7 inch. for the middle, and 12 inch. for the longest. hope that helped.
