Fahrenheit temperatur, F, can be found from a Celsius temperatur, C, using the formula F=1.8C+32. Write an equation to find the temperature at which the Farenheit and Celsius readings are equal. Then find that temperature.

When the two temperatures are the same, then:

 

(1) F = C

 

Now substitute this value of F into:

 

F = 1.8C + 32

 

C = 1.8C + 32

 

Subtract 1.8C from both sides:

 

-.8C = 32

 

Divide both sides by -.8:

 

C = 32/-.8 = -40 (the temperature at which both are the same).

C=F

 

C = 1.8C + 32
