Car "A" is heading east on a narrow road and car "B" is heading west on the same road. The cars are 10 miles apart  and car "A" is traveling 1.5 times as fast as car B . If one of them does not pull off the road, they will crash into each other in 10 minutes.  How fast is each car traveling?

r represents the speed of B

1.5r represents the speed of A

 

A:

d = (1.5r)10

d = 15r

B

d = r(10)

d = 10r

 

15r + 10r = 10

25r = 10

r = 0.4

 

Now this is 0.4 mile per minute, that is 24 mph.

 

What is the speed of the other car?
