Question

You and a friend both live the same distance from a coffee shop. You walk at a rate that is one Mike an hour faster than your friend. If your friend leaves his house at 6:30 am and you leave your house at 7:00 am, you and he will both arrive at the coffee shop at 9:00am. How fast do each of you walk? How far did each of you walk?

r represents friend's rate

r + 1 represents your rate

 

d = rt

friend: d = r(2.5)

you: d = (r + 1)(2)

 

Both are the same distance from the shop

 

2.5r = 2r + 2

0.5r = 2

r = 4
