x - y = 1
x = y + 1 add y to both sides
2x = 3y
2(y + 1) = 3y substitute for x
2y + 2 = 3y distribute
2 = y subtract 2y from both sides
x = 2 + 1 substitute for y
x = 3 combine like terms
