I work these problems by figuring out the rate that each person works alone.   When the two folks work together, then it is their rates that add up.

 

Dad can wash 1 car in 50 minutes.   His rate is 1 car /50 minutes

Junior can wash 1 car in 70 minutes   Juniors rate is 1 car /70 minutes.   The total rate is 1/50 + 1/70 =  12/350

 

So together the wash cars at a rate of 12 cars every 350 minute.  Of course they can wash 1 car in 350/12 minutes. or in 29-1/6 minutes or 29 minutes and 10 seconds.
