Last week, before taxes, you earned $539 after working 26 hours at your regular hourly rate and 6 hours at time-and-a-half. The solution to the equation 26x+9x=539 represents your regular hourly rate, x. Determine your regular hourly rate

       539       =             26                *                  x               +    6      *    (1.5x)

 

The problem asks you to determine the value of x (note: A "solution" is a value of x that makes the equation true.)

  26x+9x=539

     35x = 539                [collect like terms]

       x = 15.4
