Algebra word problems

Joe goes out for a morning walk every day, starting at 6:00 in the morning. He completes a lengthy walk at a coffee shop at 9:00 am, where he then eats breakfast before taking the bus back home. He walks at a rate of 3mph. Joe's friend Jack is staying at Joe's house and wants to join Joe for breakfast; unfortunately he is still sleeping when Joe starts his walk. Jack wakes up shortly after Joe leaves the house, but it is 8:00am before he can get dressed and get ready to meet Joe. How fast will Jack have to walk to get to the coffee shop at the same time as Joe?

Since Joe's walking rate is 3mph, he walks:

 

3 * 3mph = 9 miles from 6am to 9am.

 

Now, Jack needs to walk the same distance in 1 hour (8am to 9am)

 

So, Jack needs to walk 9mph.

 

I'd say run is more like it ;-)
