I assume this is either for resistors or capacitors in the circuit.  Since you have 1/17 and 1/12, you will need to find a common denominator which in this case is 12*17.  This will allow you to add the fractions on the RHS of the equation, and you will have (12+17)/(12*17).  You will then need to reduce this to obtain the form 1/a to find a.
