Question

Two planes travel toward each other from cities that are about 2975 km apart at rates of 440 km/hr. They started at the same time. In how many hours will they meet?

Answer 1

Let at time t they will meet. let one plane covers X distance in time t then other plane will cover rest of the distance ie (2975-X)

 

distance covered= velocity*time

 

for one plane,

X = 440* t...eq(1)

for other plane,

2975-X =440*t....eq(2)

 

on adding eq(1) and eq(2)

 

2975=880*t

 

t=2975/880 hours

 

t= 3.38068182 hours

 

t= 3.38 hours (approx)
