Hi Muslima, this is an application of: D(istance) = R(ate) * T(ime) equation. You are given the distance, 280 miles, and time, 5 hours, driven on the first day. All you need to find is the rate Tom drove on the first day.
Day 1:
D = 280 miles
T = 5 hours
D = R * T
R = D / T
Substitute for D and T:
R = 280 / 5
R = 56
On the first day, Tom drove at a rate of 56 miles per hour.
Day 2:
D = 400 miles
R = 56 mph
Solve for T:
D = R * T
T = D / R
Substitute for D and R:
T = 400 / 56
T ≈ 7.14 hours or about 7 hours and 9 minutes.
