A rectangular garden measures 7.5 yards by 9.2 yards. How many yards of wire must you use to put a fence around the garden.

The perimeter of a rectangle is 2x length + 2 x width

P = 2 (7.5) + 2(9.2) = 15 + 18.4 = 33.4 yds

This question is really asking you to calculate the perimeter of the garden because the fence is going around the garden.  The length is 9.2 yards, and the width is 7.5 yards, so you multiply the length by 2 and the width by 2 and add the two sums together.  

 

perimeter = 2length + 2width

perimeter = 2(9.2) + 2(7.5)

perimeter = 18.4 + 15

perimeter = 33.4

 

The perimeter of the garden is 33.4 yards, so the length of wire that is required to put a fence around the garden is also 33.4 yards.
