Andrew and Bill are driving golf carts on the same path in the same direction. Andrew's cart is travelling at 20 MPH and Bill's is travelling at 24 MPH. Andrew passes a lemonade stand at 6:34 A.M. If Bill passes the same lemonade stand at 6:47 A.M. at what time will BIll catch up to Andrew?

Bill passes same lemonade stand at 6.47

 

We want to determine the distance traveled and time from the lemonade stand when Bill will catch up to Andrew.

 

The distance Andrew travels is

 

d = 20t + 20(13/60) <---this additional term recognizes that Andrew passes the lemonade stand 13 minutes before Bill

 

The distance Bill travels is

 

d = 24t

 

Since the distance will be the same for both carts, we can set these two equations equal to one another and solve for time, t.

 

20t + 20(13/60) = 24t

13/3 = 4t

t = 13/12

 

Bill will catch up to Andrew in 1 hour, 5 minutes or at 7:52 AM
