(a/2 - b)^2

The answer they want is a^2/4 -ab+b^2.

I understand the a^2/4 part and the b^2 part but where i got stuck is why the have -ab. I had something completely different. Any ideas?

I am still a little confused. Here is what i got.

(a^2/4) - ab/2 -ab/2 +b^2

What I don't understand is how -ab/2 -ab/2 translates to - ab

the two middle terms are combined because -1/2 + (-1/2) equals -1  (combining two coefficients of the "ab" terms.
