Hi Averie,
The left and right page numbers of an open book are two consecutive integers whose sum is 37. Find these page numbers.
First, we need to define the variables.
Let x=the 1st integer
Let x+1=the 2nd integer
To find the sum, add them together:
x + x+1=37
Combine like terms
2x+1=37
Add -1 to both sides
2x=36
divide both sides by 2
x=18
then, x+1=18+1=19
ANSWER: The consecutive integers are 18 and 19.
We're finished!

Let n = left page number
The n + 1 = right page number
The sum of the numbers is 37
n + n + 1 = 37
2n +1 = 37
2n = 36
n = 18, n+1 = 19
