Over a season in a women's basketball league Jackson scored 39 more points than the second-highest scorer, Leslie. Together, Jackson and Leslie scored 1177 points during the season. How many points did each player score over the course of the season?

Y = the number of points scored by Leslie

X = Y +39

X + Y = 1177  substitute for X into this equation

Y + 39 + Y = 1177

2Y = 1177 -39

2Y = 1138

  Y = 569

X = Y + 39 = 569 +39 = 608

Jackson scored 608 points and Leslie scored 569 points
