For a business to realize a profit, its revenue or income, R, must be greater than its cost, C. A company that produces playing cards has a weekly revenue equation R=4.2x, where xis the number of decks of playing cards produced and sold in a week. The company has a weekly cost equation C=1.7x +1525. How many decks of cards must be produced and sold in a week for the company to make a profit?

Here's what we know from the problem

 

R > C

 

R = 4.2x

C = 1.7x + 1525

 

4.2x > 1.7x + 1525

2.5x > 1525

x>610

 

If the company makes and sells 610 decks of cards they will break even.  In order to make a profit, they need to make and sell 611 decks of cards.
