If Rich can do a job in 3 hours and roy can do the same job in 6 hours, how many hours would it take them to do the job together?

Think of this as parts of a whole.

Rich does 1/3 of the job per hour.

Roy does 1/6 of the job per hour.

Together they do 1/3 + 1/6 per hour.

(Total hours)(amount per hour) = 100%

or h(Rich+ Roy)=1

 

h(1/3 + 1/6) = 1

h(3/6) = 1

h(1/2) = 1

h = 2 

 

Together they take 2 hours.
