Olivia walked 2 2/5 km in 2/3 hour while Ryan walked 4 1/2 km in 1 1/2 hours. Who walked faster, and how many times faster?

Hi Alec,

 

You will want to cover all the numbers to fractions

The distance  and time for Olivia   

2 2/5 km = 12/5 km     (multiply the whole number 2 by 5 and add the other 2 to it to get 12 leave the 5 at  the bottom)

2/3 hour 

v = 12/5 ÷ 2/3 = 12/5 *3/2 = 18/5 km per hour

(when you change the division sign to multiplication you must flip the fraction upside down)

 

For Ryan

4 1/2 km = 9/2 km

1 1/2 hour = 3/2 hour

u = (9/2)/(3/2) = 9/2*2/3 = 3 km per hour

since v = 18/5  = 3 3/5  kmph  Olivia walked faster than Ryan

 

(18/5)/3 = 18/5*1/3 =6/5

Olivia walks 6/5 (1.2) times faster than Ryan
