Hi Hollie, the simple way to graph an equation of a line is to create a table of x- and y-values starting with the x- and y-intercept points.
For the equation: -2x + 5y = 10,
Set x = 0 and find the y-intercept point.
-2 * 0 + 5y = 10
5y = 10
y = 2
One point on the line is: (0, 2), the y-intercept point
Set y = 0 and find the x-intercept point.
-2x + 5 * 0 = 10
-2x = 10
x = -5
A second point on the line is: (-5, 0), the x-intercept point
You can now graph the line using these two points.
The table would be:
x-values y-values
-----------------------
0 2
-5 0
We could add additional points, but it is not necessary for this line.
