We have fifty pounds of a mixture that is 96% concrete and 4%water. We need to end up with a mixture that if sixty pounds that is 95% concrete and 5% water. Determine the proportions of concrete water needed in the ten pounds that we must add

Current mixture:  50 lbs x .96 = 48 lbs of concrete,  2 lbs of water

 

You want:            60 lbs x .95 = 57 lbs of concrete, 3 lbs of water

 

Therefore, you must add             9 lbs of concrete,  1 lb of water, so a 9:1 mixture of concrete to water
