Two planes, which are 3540 miles apart, fly toward each other. Their speeds differ by 35 mph. If they pass each other in 4 hours, what is the speed of each?

Let x = speed of slower plane

 

Then x+35 = speed of faster plane

 

Distance = (Rate)(Time)

 

When the two planes pass each other, the sum of their distances is 3540 miles.

 

So, 4x + 4(x+35) = 3540

 

       x + (x+35) = 885

 

            2x + 35 = 885

 

                   2x = 850

 

                    x = 425 mph and x+35 = 460 mph
