Word Problem. Please help!

Question

there is a 12 foot fence on one side of a rectangular garden. the gardener has 44 feet of fencing to enclose the other three sides. What Is the length of the gardens longer dimension?

let x = length of known side of the rectangle
let y = length of unknown side of the rectangle 

44+12 = 2x + 2y

56 = 2x + 2y

since x= 12

56 = 24 + 2y
32 = 2y
y = 16

 

Length of gardens longer dimension is 16 feet
