Factor 60x-84 by using GCF

Hi Kathy...lets give this a try:, think of your times tables.

 

Factor really means to break-up into smaller pieces.

 

Like 60 = 2x2x3x5=60

 

or: 12x5=60

 

Ask yourself: "Does 12 divide into 60 evenly...yes...5 times  so factor out a 12 giving:

 

12(5)

 

 

 

  Again...for 84 =2x2x3x7  =84

 

  or:  12*7 =84.......  so both of these numbers  60 and 84 have one number in common.....12

 

         12(7)                                

 

 

       so lets factor out a 12 out of 60 and 84  as for the "X" there is no X on the 84 side

 

         so we CANNOT factor out an X....stays there....therefore we have:

 

 

     12(5x-7)  =ansr       

 

       To check:  Multiply the 5x by 12   giving 60x   multiply the 7 by 12  giving 84
