step 2: Combine like terms

12x - 6x = 6x             16 + 14 = 30

 

step 3: The result is:      6x = 30

 

step 4: Divide each side by 6 to get "x" by itself

6x/6 = 30/6

Let's begin with the first parenthetical equation...

4(3x+4)

12x+16

 

Second parenthetical equation...

-2(3x-7)

Note the fact that the subtraction sign is also a negative sign for the 2...

-6x+14

Note the fact that -7, when multiplied by -2, becomes POSITIVE 14...

12x+16-6x+14

Let's combine like terms...

12x-6x=6x  and 16+14=30

 

6x+30
