Kimberly, PLZ read about "Lucky" Penny and beginning to do a pre-flight checklist before taking off in an F-16 to intercept Flight 83 on 9/111/2001.  There are times that the rules change!

During a test or when speed matters, the rules change.  If there is a multiple-choice question and it is specified that there is only one correct answer, you do not have to determine the correct answer and then find it in the list -- you may, instead, eliminate the "distractors," and select the "key" (the correct answer) and move on.  You may have time at the end to come back to check your work.

It takes some practice, but as Raphael D. pointed out, x=8 only occurs in answer A.  It is not necessary to verify that the value of y=5 because there is one correct answer.  Now, if you are just learning and you want to build you confidence, you may check that the question was created correctly.  However, on a standardized test, you must forget that!
