we can rewrite the inequality this way: y > -x/3 -4
Let's cahange ">"sign to "=" , y= -x/3 - 4
This equation describes a strait line - take 2 points and graph it: say one be the (0,-4) [set x=0 and find y]
as second point you may take the point with y=0 [now,find its X] x=-12; that is (-12,0)
You will see the strait line having negative slope ...
And, the original equation corresponds to the (x,y) pairs on coordinate system such that for a given x corresponding y's lie higher than the strait line in that particular x.
The strait line divides the coordinate plane into 2 parts - the upper part of the line, and the part which is below the line.
The upper part will be the solution of the original inequality - all the points there have greater Y's then the line's Y at given X ... that is they describe scenario y>-x/3-4 i.e. same as your original inequality: you can shade the upper part, and this shaded side of the line is the solution of inequality. we solved the inequality graphically - or, which is same, we have graphed the inequality.
