Help please?

Marissa and Kendra are 2 years apart in age. Their ages are two consecutive even integers. Kendra is the younger of the two. If Marissa's age is added to twice Kendra's age, the result is 38. How old is each girl?

Hi Samantha,

 

"their ages are two consecutive even integers, Kendra is younger" . . . so let X = Kendra's age.  Then X + 2 = Marissa's age

 

"If Marissa's age is added to twice Kendra's age" . . . (X+2) + 2X

 

"the result is 38" . . . X + 2 + 2X = 38

 

Combine like terms --> 3X = 36

 

Divide both sides by 3--> X = 12 = Kendra's age

 

14 is Marissa's age
