Graph the equations y = -3x + 16 and y = 5x

Solve equations simultaneously...

 

Eq1. y=-3x+16 → y=-3x+16

Eq2. y=5x  →  → -y=-5x.........multiply both sides by (-1)      

                         --------------

                           0=-8x+16...add each term, both equations above

                         8x=16..........add 8x both sides

                         ∴x=2...........plug into Eq2, solve for y....

 

                   Eq2.  y=5x

                             =5(2)

                         ∴y=10

 

So point of intersection is (2,10), solution for both equations.  Now plug this solution into both original equations to check for truth and verify your solution is correct.  Always check your work.

 

When graphing the equations, interpret info from "slope-intercept" form of the equation where......

   m= slope of line=rise/run

   b=y-intercept

 

Both Eq1 and Eq2 are written in this form already (note Eq2 can be rewritten as 'y=5x+0' where b=0.
