Let's go with what we know...
Serena has 40 CDs. That's 2 times more than Sam has, plus 6.
What we don't know is how many CDs Sam has. That's the variable (x). The variable (x) represents the number of CDs Sam has.
So..
40=2x+6
or 2x+6=40
Solve for x...
First, subtract 6 from both sides. That gives us 34=2x
Next, get the variable by itself by dividing both sides by 2
That leaves us with 17=x
If x represent the number of CDs Sam has, Sam has 17 CDs.
