Finding string length

A 19 - foot piece of string is cut into two pieces so that the longer piece is 4 ft longer than twice the shorter piece. if the shorter piece is x feet long, find the lengths of both pieces.

Try to figure this out yourself. . .

 

The question tells you that the shorter piece is X feet long.

 

It says that the longer piece is 4 feet longer so its length is X + what number?

 

Then it says that the the total length is 19

 

So add up the two expressions and make them equal 19 and solve for X.
