Solve the equation.

1. Find the slope of the line passing through the points (7, –4) and (–6, –7).

• Slope = rise/run = (y2 - y1)/(x2 - x1) = (-4 - -7)/(7 - -6) = (-4 + 7)/(7 + 6) = -3/13

2. |2x + 7| = 1

 

Split into 2 equations and solve for x:

2x + 7 = 1       and         2x + 7 = -1

     - 7   -7                           - 7     -7                subtract 7 on each side to get 2x by itself
