Since they both equal Y, they also are equal to one another:
2x + 3 = Y = 3x + 1
2x + 3 = 3x + 1
Now to isolate x. Subtract 1 from both sides:
2x + 3 - 1 = 3x + 1 - 1
2x + 2 = 3x
Now subtract 2x from both sides:
2x - 2x + 2 = 3x - 2x
2 = x
Now that we know x, we can solve for Y:
Y = 2 * 2 + 3
Y = 4 + 3
Y = 7
Check with the other equation:
Y = 3 * 2 + 1
Y = 6 + 1
Y = 7
