The easiest way to solve this system of equations for x and y is to simply add the equations

 

equations (1) 2x + 5 y = 17

equations (2) 6x -  5y  = -9

 

adding equation (2) to equation (1) gives us

 

8x = 8 or x=1

 

Substituting x=1 back into equation (1) gives us 2 + 5 y = 17 or 5y = 15 or y=3
