On Friday, a local hamburger shop sold a combined total of 357 hamburgers and cheeseburgers. The number of cheeseburgers sold was two times the number of hamburgers sold. How many hamburgers were sold on Friday?

Aciandra, Let x= the# of hamburgers and Let 2(x)=the number of cheeseburgers.  The combined total of hamburgers and cheeseburgers is 357.  Set the equation:  x+2x=357;  Combine the like terms.  3x=357;  Divide both sides of the equation by 3.  x=119 which is the # of hamburgers;  and 2(119)=238 which is the # of cheeseburgers.  Check:  119+238=357;  357=357
