Hi Ana,
When our country first began, there were no states. They were originally 13 colonies of Great Britain. We wanted independence from Britain for many reasons and when we made our Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776 we were considered traitors. These colonies did not become states until each colony ratified the Constitution, with the first state being Delaware in 1787.
