Hi Jacob, I don't think I completely understand your question, but it looks like the expression you're giving is related to the Distributive Property.
We know that (12+3)x is just plain old 15x (since we can add the 12 and the 3 in the parentheses).
But by the distributive property, we could also say that (12+3)x = 12x + 3x . And 12x +3x also equals 15x.
