Graph Absolute Value Equation

GRAPH EACH ABSOLUTE VALUE EQUATION.

( the exclamation mark are the absolute value signs, please help)

Y = [ 1/4 x]

 

This will be a "mirror image".  When X is positive, the Y will be in the 2nd quadrant,  test points (0,0),(4, 1), (8, 2) etc.

 

When X is NEGATIVE, the absolute value will be POSITIVE.  The Y coordinates will remain the same for the values of X when X is negative. (0,0), (-4, 1), (-8, 2), etc.

 

The graph will look like a "V", with the ORIGIN (0,0) being the POINT of the V.

The easiest way to begin this problem is to make a table of x and y values.

 

For example: x= -2, -1, 0, 1, 2. plug these into the equation to find your y values.

y= 1/2, 1/4, 0, -1/4, -1/2.

 

Now you can combine your x and y values to find your points on your graph:

(-2, 1/2), (-1, 1/4), (0,0), (1, -1/4), (2, -1/2)

 

These points will make a "v" on your graph with a vertex at (0, 0).
