Please help! Linear equations word problem.

in 1993 funding or a program increased by 0.52 million dollars from the funding in 1992. In 1994, the increase was 0.17 billion dollars over the funding in 1993. For those three years the funding was 11.59 billion dollars. How much was funded in each of these three years?

Let x = the number of dollars funded in 1992 in billions

 

The funding for 1993 would be: x + 0.52 (billion)

Then the funding for 1994 would be: x + 0.52 +0.17 = x + 0.69

 

The total funding would be: x + (x + 0.52) + (x + 0.69) = 11.59

 

Add your like terms:

 

3x + 1.21 = 11.59

 

Subtract 1.21 from both sides:

 

3x = 10.38

 

Divide both sides by 3:

 

x = 3.46

 

Therefore, in 1992, the funding was x = 3.46 billion

In 1993, the funding was (x+0.52) = 3.46 + 0.52 = 3.98 billion

In 1994, the funding was (x+0.69) = 3.46 + 0.69 = 4.15 billion
