How do you solve this?

This is a great answer.  And I have learned something new.  I appreciate that.  However, it is missing a few details.  Tammy is not just asking how to solve this question, but all questions like it.  I understand why you selected the number 8.  It is the largest number, while being easily divided by 2 and 4.  After years of experience, you and I can easily make a determination that 8 is the most efficient number to work with.  However, she is new at this.  Furthermore, she needs to also understand the protocol that the unknown factor must eventually be on the left, completedly isolated.  This protocol is necessary because Tammy not only has to learn how to solve this problem, but how to show others how she reached her conclusion.  If she has a career in accounting, this will be a fact of her life.
