Hi Martha,
First step with word problems is ALWAYS to write a few things that help you get started. Usually, you need to understand the problem well enough to bring in the proper tools...that is, one or more equations. If you need to make some variables, be sure to do that also and write down their meanings....
need to know how many T-shirts... lets call that number "N"
What equation will be used to compute total money spent on items?.... something like
(N * costperItem) + (shipping cost) = total
so, then with some substituting of numbers where the variables are, and a little math, you're off and running to solve for N.
Please let me know how you do with the hints and techniques I've provided. You can easily find me in the Wyzant online tutoring group and I'd be glad to help you conquer math and algebra...or just add comments to this thread.
Thanks for your question,
Frederick M.
