CD= X, DE= X+6 CE= 40, D is between C and E. Find DE

I need to use a line segment but I can't seem to figure it out.

C, D, and E are co-linear with D between C and E, so CD + DE = CE and:

• CD = x
• DE = x + 6
• CE = 40

      CD + DE = CE

      x + x + 6 = 40

      2x + 6 = 40

      2x = 34

      x = 17

 

So:

 

      CD = x = 17

      DE = x + 6 = 17 + 6 = 23

      CE = 17 + 23 = 40
