I use PEMDAS when I'm trying to remember the steps you take to solve an algebraic equation, i.e., the order of operations . You solve in this order:
P: parentheses (work inside the parentheses first)
E: exponents (then apply the exponents)
M/D: multiplication/division comes next
A/S: addition/subtraction come last
