Hi, Donna.
You are being asked to move the terms of the equation around so that the y is alone on the left side of the equation. This is also called "solving for y."
You follow the same steps and rules as if you were solving an equation. You "undo" what is being done to y, and you have to do the same thing to both sides of the equation.
3x + y = 3 We need to subtract 3x from both sides
-3x -3x
y = -3x + 3
The -3x and 3 are not like terms so you cannot combine them. You have now "rewritten" the equation in the y=mx+b form, or slope-intercept form.
We rewrite equations into this form to make it easy to find the slope of the line or to graph the equation.
