Stella runs a business out of her home making quilts. Each month she has fixed cost of $200. In addition, for each quilt she makes, she incurs an additional cost of $1.75. If her total cost for the month were $280.50, how many quilts did she make?

      $280.50 = fixed cost of $200 + (additional cost of $1.75)*(number of quilts)

Let x=number of quilts made during the month

      280.50 = 200.00 + 1.75x

      80.50 = 1.75x                (subtract 200.00 from both sides)

        x = 46

Check:

  Is  $200.00 + (46)($1.75)  =  $280.50    ?

       $200.00 + $80.50  =  $280.50    ?  yes.
