How do you solve y=2x-3/5x+4

We have to learn how to slove for x when we are given the equation in terms of y. I dont know how to do this with an equation with a variable fraction.  any help?

Oops, I didn't even think it was (2x-3)/(5x+4)!!

Seriously, how difficult it is to type parentheses??? I am very much upset at students not knowing the simple thing: you need to use parentheses to specify the order of operations!!! It just wastes our time and then, when they get the wrong answer because we answered not the right question, we will be the ones to blame. How convenient!

So the book doesn't tell us if it is in paranthesis or not...that is where the confusion came in.  it is written as

y=2x-3
    5x+4

I am assuming that it is supposed to be just like (2x-3)
                                                                       (5x+4)
So Justin L, I think your approach makes sense to me, but if someone could clarify, that would help me. I have a test on Friday and this is one the problems I am unsure of how to do.  Thanks

Yea if that's how your book has it then cross multiplying would be easiest.

- If there are any other questions like that in your book you can post it and I'll walk you through another one just to be sure.
