18 1/8 - 9 2/3
We have two mixed numerals... First we turn them
into improper fractions...
We do this by multiplying the denominator of the fraction
by the whole number... add the product to the numerator...
place the sum over the denominator...
a b/c = [c(a)+b]/c
18 1/8 = (8(18)+1)/8 = 145/8
9 2/3 = (3(9)+2)/3 = 29/3
18 1/8 - 9 2/3 = 145/8 - 29/3
We need a common denominator so we need to find the
least common multiple of 8 and 3 (the smallest number
that 8 and 3 will both divide into). That is 24.
Multiply (145/8)(3/3) and (29/3)(8/8) to get a common
denominator of 24
(145/8)(3/3) = 435/24
(29/3)(8/8) = 232/24
145/8 - 29/3 = 435/24 - 232/24 = (435-232)/24 = 203/24
To turn this improper fraction into a mixed number divide 203 by 24
= 8 with a remainder of 11
203/24 = 8 11/24

18 1/8 - 9 2/3
we can change just the fractions initially
1/8 = 3/24 and 2/3 = 16/24
18 3/24
- 9 16/24
------------
since 16/24 > 3/24 we borrow 1 from 18.
the 1 equates to 24/24 which we add to
3/24... 18 3/24 = 17 27/24
17 27/24
- 9 16/24
-------------
8 11/24
This is another way of doing the problem
which may be easier overall.
Hope this helps.
