 trying to get the amount of square inches and square feet on a six inch pipe.

Above is wrong (I think), 6 is the DIAMETER (?) , not the RADIUS.  DIAMETER IS 2 times the RADIUS.

 

However, the formula is correct Area = pi (r)^2.   Radius (3) is half of diameter (6).

 

Area = pi (3)^2 or 9 (pi) [ 9 times Pi] square inches: where Pi is 3.14.

I am afraid you question is rather ambiguous. Do you want the area of the open end of a pipe whose radius is 6 inches?

 

If so, the area is pi(r^2).

 

The area for this example would be: pi(6^2) = 36(pi) square inches.

 

To get the square feet you have to convert square inches to square feet. You would have to divide by 12^2 (since 12 inches are in one foot).

 

Square feet = 36(pi)/144
